Kofusu Surfboard Concept

The ‘Kofusu’ project explores the potential of applying principles from one sport to the design of equipment for another.

A difference we observed upon investigating other boardsports is that alpine skis and snowboards use controlled flex in their design, whereas surfboards are stiff and rely on geometry to define their manoeuvrability. By introducing flex to the surfboard, the concept allows surfers to ‘load’ the board and ‘carve’ tighter radius turns.

Flex is achieved with a hydrofoil that is fixed via two composite springs. This element has been applied to two designs, one more traditional, and the second with a distinctive blunt nose.
